Genesis GMR-001 to go on display at the Larusmiani Automotive Gallery

Words: Nathan Chadwick

April is a busy month for Milan – the Salone del Mobile and Design Week are key high points of the city’s cultural year. The Larusmiani Automotive Gallery in the Montenapoleone District is combining the two with a series of automotive displays. Earlier this month the Lotus Theory 1 took pride of place, and now the focus turns to the Genesis GMR-001 ahead of its World Endurance Championship run at Imola.

The powertrain is among the most technically significant aspects of the Genesis GMR-001 hypercar. At its core is a 3.2-litre twin-turbocharged V8, derived from Hyundai World Rally Championship programme inline-four architecture – effectively combining two units into a single engine. This internal-combustion set-up is paired with the standardised LMDh hybrid system, comprising a rear-axle motor generator unit supplied by Bosch and a battery system from Williams Advanced Engineering. The electric component contributes approximately 67hp within a total regulated system output of around 671hp.

Aerodynamically the GMR-001 operates within the tightly defined parameters of LMDh regulations. Its design is centred on a flat floor and large rear diffuser, which together generate the majority of downforce, supported by a front splitter and integrated dive planes. Bodywork is heavily influenced by cooling requirements, with airflow managed through sculpted sidepods and upper exits, while overall efficiency is prioritised through underbody performance rather than extreme surface aero. Within these constraints, Genesis incorporates brand-specific elements such as its Parabolic Line surfacing, integrating styling into airflow management, while retaining distinctive lighting signatures without compromising aerodynamic performance.

“Lotus and Genesis represent two distinct chapters of the same story: that of the automobile as a total act of design,” says Guglielmo Miani, CEO of Larusmiani. “Our Automotive Gallery is the reflection of this conviction – a space where style, design and a rigorous selection of automobiles come together to create something that goes beyond exhibition: a community that grows around a genuine passion for the automobile, and that finds in every presence not a fleeting impression but an enduring mark. To welcome Lotus and Genesis into this space is not a curatorial choice – it is a declaration of method. We choose what has something to say.”
