Steve McQueen Ferrari NART Spyder heads Gooding Christie’s inaugural New York sale

Words: Nathan Chadwick

A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder formerly owned by Steve McQueen will make its public auction debut at the Gooding Christie’s inaugural Rétromobile New York sale on November 20-21, 2026.

Chassis 10453 is the sixth of the ten NART Spyders built and was originally delivered new to McQueen. It is estimated at between $15m and $20m. Completed in September 1967, the Ferrari was invoiced to Luigi Chinetti Motors before being sold to McQueen through Hollywood Sport Cars. It was originally finished in Blu Sera, or Evening Blue, making it the first of two NART Spiders to leave the factory in the colour.

McQueen made several changes to the car shortly after taking delivery. He had it repainted in a darker metallic blue and the seats retrimmed with a distinctive stitching pattern, along with further cosmetic alterations that remain with the Ferrari today.

The car was subsequently involved in an accident on Pacific Coast Highway and repaired for McQueen by Junior Conway. By 1971 it had passed to J David Kopf of Tujunga, California. The current owner acquired the Ferrari in 1986 through Long Island Ferrari dealer Grand Prix SSR. It has remained in the same collection for the subsequent 40 years and has been preserved rather than restored.

Gooding Christie’s says chassis 10453 retains its matching-numbers engine and transaxle, original Scaglietti bodywork, metallic blue finish and the interior details introduced during McQueen’s ownership.

Although seldom publicly displayed, the NART Spyder appeared at the Louis Vuitton Classic at Rockefeller Center in 1996. It was also exhibited as part of La Bella Macchina: The Art of Ferrari at the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia in 2003.

Its appearance at Rétromobile New York will therefore return the car to Manhattan 30 years after the Rockefeller Center event, while also marking the first time chassis 10453 has been offered at public auction.

“We are honoured to bring this NART Spyder to public auction for the very first time,” said Gooding Christie’s president David Gooding. “Few cars are as fitting as this Ferrari, with its rarity, beauty and cultural relevance, to star as the headlining lot for our inaugural New York Auctions at Rétromobile this November.”

Ferrari historian Marcel Massini described the car as being “forever linked” with McQueen, and said its first appearance at auction would mark “a monumental moment in car history”.

Two further Scaglietti-bodied Ferraris have so far been announced for the New York sale. A 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB is estimated at between $2.25m and $2.5m, while a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso is estimated at between $1.4m and $1.6m.

Gooding Christie’s Rétromobile New York Auctions will take place at the Javits Center on November 20-21, with public viewing running from November 18 until the conclusion of the sale. More details are available here.
