San Marino, Italy roars to the full-bore fun of RallyLegend 2025

Words: Nathan Chadwick

RallyLegend 2025 brought to life the sights and sounds of all eras of rallying in one of Europe’s most beloved motor sport regions. On October 2-5, San Marino played host to three different classes competing for Historic rallying glory, along with several special demonstrations in celebration of key anniversaries.

The RallyLegend 2025 winner of the Classic competition, based on 1990s/2000s-era cars, was won by the crew of Simon Jean-Joseph and Patrick Pivato in their 1995 Subaru Impreza 555. The result also meant they won the McRae Subaru Group A Rally Trophy, a special award featuring a pair of shoes belonging to the late Colin McRae, donated by the McRae family.

A 1996 Impreza crewed by Gianpietro Bendotti and Giuliano Vaerini came second, while Miklos Kazar and Tamas Begala finished third in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX.

The Historic classification at RallyLegend 2025, dedicated to cars of the 1970s and early 1980s, was won by Stefano Rosati and Corrado Costa in a 1981 Talbot Lotus Sunbeam. Mirko and Elisa Zanotti in a 1984 Opel Manta GTE finished second, while the 1979 Ford Escort Mk2 of Nemo Mazza and Andrea Ercolani Volta finished third.

In the WRC category, the Spanish crew of Victor Senra Carreira and Paula Ramos Torrente took their Hyundai i20 WRC to victory ahead of Luca Pedersoli and Anna Tomasi in a similar Hyundai. Third place went to Stepan Vojtech and Michal Ernst in a Citroën C3 WRC Plus.

Away from the competitive action at RallyLegend 2025, Finnish rally driver Kalle Rovanperä was on hand to deliver stunts, jumps and donuts to the crowd in his Toyota Starlet, while countryman Harri Rovanperä demonstrated the SEAT Cordoba WRC he raced in the 1990s. There was also a big display of Subaru Impreza and Legacy Group A cars, celebrating 30 years since Colin McRae’s World Rally Championship title, plus a celebration of the Lancia Delta S4, 40 years after its debut on the rally scene.

There were plenty of 1970s rally cars as well, with the likes of the Lancia Stratos, Fulvia HF, Fiat 131 Abarth, Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV, Opel Kadett GTE, Simca Rally2, Alpine Renault A110 and Fiat Ritmo taking to the stages.

Previous champions of the 1970s also got in on the act at RallyLegend 2025, including Tony Fassina, Adartico Vudafieri, Maurizio Verini and Gabriele Noberasco. However, flamboyance is always a key part of the event, and the Pirelli Jump in the Legend trophy went to Ivars and Andris Velme for achieving the longest jump, in their 1983 Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2.
