One-of-14 Porsche 993 Turbo Cabriolet heads to Iconic Auctioneers NEC Classic Car show sale

Words: Nathan Chadwick

A one-of-14 Porsche 993 Turbo Cabriolet built by Sonderwunsch is being put up for grabs at Iconic Auctioneers’ NEC Classic Motor Show sale in November 2026.

Porsche did not offer a 911 Turbo Cabriolet during the 993 era, but that didn’t stop one particular dealer seeing the value in the proposition. Fritz Haberl’s MAHAG Porsche distributorship in Munich saw the potential in a 993 Turbo Cabriolet, having seen the Carrera Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show in 1994. Porsche agreed to fulfil the order, but only if there was a minimum of ten cars. Haberl did better than that, sourcing 14 orders from around the world, and production began. However, the underpinnings are not the same as on the eventual 993 Turbo…

When production began, the standard 993-generation 911 Turbo was still in development, so Porsche turned to the proven Type M64/50 3.6-litre turbo engine. This single-turbocharged and intercooled flat-six produced 360bhp and was paired with the Getrag five-speed gearbox from the Turbo 3.6. Installing the powertrain was far from easy, because the cabriolet’s rear-quarter sheet metal, both inside and out, differed significantly from the coupé’s. With the flat-six in place, reinforced transmission, rear-wheel drive, widened Turbo bodywork and a 3.6 Turbo S rear spoiler, the drop-top cost DM264,000, some DM112,000 more than a standard 993 Cabriolet.

Chassis numbers ran from WP0ZZZ99ZSS338501 to 338514, with every example officially listed by Porsche as a production car and certified for road use in 1995. The first nine were built in left-hand-drive form and the final five in right-hand drive for delivery to Hong Kong and South Africa. Each car was made to individual customer specification, yet all shared the same underlying architecture, meaning that no two were ever identical.

Finished in Amaranth Violet (L39D) with a (GZ) Marble Grey/Black full leather interior, the car for sale at the Iconic Auctioneers’ NEC Classic Motor Show auction was first delivered new to Hong Kong (C15). The option sticker confirms:
