Car design legend Giorgetto Giugiaro recovering after car crash in Sardinia

Words: Nathan Chadwick

Giorgetto Giugiaro is recovering after being involved in an horrific road-traffic accident over the weekend. The legendary 86-year-old automotive designer lost control of his Land Rover Defender on the hairpin roads in Abbiadori, near La Celvia in the Arzachena area of Sardinia. It is reported that while navigating a sharp right-hand turn between Cala di Volpe and Romazzino, the car lost control, went off the road, crashed through a low stone wall and rolled down to the road below.

Found to be in a serious condition, Giugiaro was given emergency medical care and then airlifted to the Giovanni Paolo II Hospital in Olbia, suffering injuries to his spine, face and lower limbs. After further tests his condition was reassessed to be not as grave as first feared, and his life is not in danger.

His son Fabrizio Giugiaro met with reporters following the incident. “I spoke with my father shortly after the accident. He seemed clear-headed, just a bit dazed from the airbag deployment,” he said. “The car went straight at the curve and tumbled down about 20 metres, finally resting on one side at the hairpin below. They ran a CT scan at the hospital, and he’s expected to be discharged within a couple of days wearing a support brace.”

All at Magneto magazine wish him a swift recovery.
