DeLorean will unveil new car at Pebble Beach on August 18

Texas-based DeLorean Motor Company has announced an August 18, 2022 reveal date for its highly anticipated EV concept car, via a cryptic Tweet and accompanying teaser image of the car’s rear light.

DeLorean has confirmed that the global unveiling will take place on the Concept Lawn at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and that more details will be revealed as Monterey Car Week progresses. The yet-unnamed car will be the first new model to wear a DeLorean badge in over 40 years.

The project is once again being undertaken in partnership with ItalDesign, confirming rumours of the Italian carrozzeria’s involvement when shadowy images of DeLorean’s concept car flooded the internet back in February.

Despite the news, details are still very thin on the ground, with little known about the car’s powertrain or wider specifications. Even so, fans of the marque will be delighted that the new model looks set to retain the gullwing doors and stainless-steel finish of the iconic original.

From the limited photos, the car looks to espouse a more contemporary design language than the trademark wedginess of the original, with slim LED rear-light graphics, a rising window line and modernised version of the DMC-12’s slatted rear screen.

Some scepticism initially surrounded the announcement of a new model – particularly as the company’s last effort in 2016 came to nothing. The DeLorean Motor Company has been based in San Antonio, Texas since 1995 following Stephen Wynne’s purchase of the marque’s naming rights, yet the company has largely stuck to servicing and restoring classic models since then.

However, DeLorean’s definitive announcement of a release date and location makes its latest attempt look far more encouraging. Here’s hoping the modern DeLorean can write an exciting new chapter for a marque that collapsed under the controversy of John DeLorean’s drug-trafficking case before transforming into a Hollywood icon in Back to the Future.

Further details are expected to be revealed in the coming months, and more information can be found on DeLorean’s website.
