De Tomaso Automobili has publicly unveiled its production-spec P72 hypercar – an analogue, V12-powered creation that channels the spirit of the De Tomaso P70 of the 1960s. The P72 first broke cover in concept form all the way back in 2019, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Underpinning the production P72 is a bespoke carbonfibre unibody monocoque woven from 4×4 twill weave. Remarkably, the monocoque is formed from a single piece of carbonfibre with no bonded sections, improving rigidity and shedding valuable kilograms.

Further benefits of this bespoke chassis are optimised suspension geometry and mounting points, as well as enabling the seats and powertrain to be positioned as low as possible to hone the weight distribution and overall balance. Unsurprisingly, the bodywork is also entirely composed of carbonfibre and available in a range of heritage-inspired paint finishes.
The chassis is paired with a 5.0-litre V8 engine based upon Ford’s Coyote unit but developed specifically for De Tomaso’s ‘P’ platform with bespoke forged internals and a supercharger. The headline figures are 700bhp and 605lb ft of torque.

Naturally, the engine is paired with a short-ratio six-speed manual transmission befitting the P72’s analogue ethos. Motor sport-style push-rod suspension and three-way adjustable damping help transmit the car’s impressive power to the road.
The analogue philosophy continues in the interior, where it unapologetically rejects modern distractions such as screens, haptic controls and head-up displays in favour of analogue gauges and bespoke switchgear. A striking exposed-linkage shifter takes centre stage, complemented by swathes of machined metal finishes and leather adorning almost every surface.

“The P72 was our promise to faithfully revive an historic marque,” said De Tomaso Automobili CEO Norman Choi. “This first production-specification vehicle embodies everything we stand for: a mechanical soul, timeless beauty and a driving experience that rises above modern convention.”
Deliveries are set to begin at the end of this year.
